Exploring Food Security During South Africa’s Post-Apartheid Era
By Nicole Crowie
I will be exploring the prevalence of food insecurity in South Africa during the post-apartheid era and examining the impacts apartheid had on food security in populations of colour. I will then investigate initiatives the government and the people have created to address the issue of hunger in the country and summarize my findings in a literature review. I will then create a curated inventory of resources and make the inventory available on the Department of Human Nutrition’s website. Additionally, I will develop a framework/template for assembling global resources on food insecurity so that other students can build on and continue this research while highlighting a different country.
These initiatives could be valuable to examine as successful initiatives In South Africa could be applied to other countries, such as Canada, and specifically in Nova Scotia, where rates of food insecurity are the highest amongst all the provinces. As well, rates of food insecurity tend to be higher in student and marginalized populations. Therefore, successful initiatives identified could be applied to the Antigonish community and help alleviate the rates of food insecurity amongst the student population here at StFX.
